Ride to Jinshanling Great Wall (2.5 hours)
Great Wall at Jinshanling Section (3-4 hours)
In c. 220 B.C., under Qin Shi Huang, sections of earlier fortifications were joined together to form a united defence system against invasions from the north. Construction continued up to the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), when the Great Wall became the world’s largest military structure. Its historic and strategic importance is matched only by its architectural significance.
The Great Wall at Jinshanling is one of the best preserved parts of the Great Wall with many original features. The Jinshanling section of the Great Wall is 10.5 km long with 5 passes, 67 towers and 3 beacon towers. The Jinshanling Great Wall was first built in the sixth century during the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420-589).During the Ming(1368-1644) Dynasty, General Qi Jiguang improved the structure of the Jinshanling Great Wall by making it higher and denser and by building double walls at strategic sections. Its gentle gradient makes Jinshanling a vulnerable spot, easy to attack but difficult to defend. At the Jinshanling section of the Great Wall, however, the walls are more solid, and the watchtowers taller, and more concentrated. Viewed from a distance, the Jinshanling Great Wall is like a giant dragon, curving its path over the mountain peaks whose line it follows.
Photographers know that the best place to take pictures of the Great Wall is not Badaling or Mutianyu, but Jinshanling.
