Ride to Cuandixia village (2.5 hours)
Situated about 90 kilometers from downtown Beijing, Chuandixia Village（爨底下村） becomes well-known for its 500 well-preserved quadrangle dwellings in the possession of over 70 families, which can date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. (1420-1911)These houses are built on the side of a hill, surrounded by mountains and forests. Steep stairs and lanes paved with rocks are simple and unadorned.
The character “Cuan” has the meaning of a stove. Villagers named it “cuandixia” with the implication of being a shelter to keep away the severe cold and war. On the walls still remain the inscriptions of ancient China, as well as the red slogans of the 1950s and 60s. Nowadays, the local people are capitalizing on the attractiveness of the village, and have turned it into a tourist destination. Some have found themselves a job as tour guide.
Cuandixia itself is nice..a good place to get away from the hectic city life.
